By destroying meteorites and space enemies you will get from 50-100 points, but if you get hit, you will lose a piece of the health meter, which is on the right upper corner. Lose all health pieces or crash and the game is over. You can avoid obstacles by jumping over them (not earning points) or shoot and destroy them (and thus earn extra points).
